    Busting Myths About Sustainable Fashion

The fast culture has harmed the environment. As a result, sustainable fashion is becoming increasingly popular in India. It is an approach used by brands to design apparel that lessens its negative effects on the environment while simultaneously taking care of the workers who make the items. It is, to put it briefly, clothing that is produced ethically and sustainably.

The Conscious Closet, a company dedicated to promoting sustainable clothes in India, is here to bust some common myths.

     1. Expensive means sustainable: A widespread assumption holds that greater prices are associated with high quality and that higher criteria for sustainability and ethics must follow.

However, luxury brands adopt a technique known as prestige or premium pricing, in which they maintain high prices based on a psychology of perceived qualities or benefits, such as excellent quality, inventiveness, or uniqueness. However, a high price does not imply that a garment is created with eco-friendly or ethically sourced materials.

    2. Foreign-Made Clothes Are Sustainable: Customers believe that “Made in the USA,” “Made in the UK,” “Made in France,” etc., equals higher quality and, indirectly, higher ethics. Sadly, this is not the case.

It is a global epidemic that affects workers in the apparel industry who make goods at all price points, from fast fashion to luxury. Brands purposefully look for suppliers with whom they can negotiate the lowest price to maximise profits, regardless of where clothing is produced.

     3. Second-hand Clothing is Sustainable: Although buying used clothes can be a more ethical and environmentally friendly option, we must admit that the secondhand market is not necessarily sustainable. Hence, only 10-20% of products donated to charities sell in their shops due to low quality.

The rest is sold to secondhand wholesalers who then sell it in bulk to other locations as secondhand clothes, where it is usually thrown away because the quality is judged to be low. Only a small but growing fraction finds up in landfills.

So, although you may believe your unwanted donations are helping those in need, most of the time they end up being wasted.

     4. Sustainable Fashion Cannot Be Trendy: Simply put, this is a myth. The fabric’s design, which depends on the designer’s creativity, determines if anything is stylish or trendy. Yes, it is a little difficult, but it is entirely achievable.

If you still have any doubts, The Conscious Closet is a good example.
